Documentarian – Documentarian

I am an emerging researcher, educator, and visual practitioner working across material culture, cultural heritage, cultural memory, and visual research.

My professional background is in photography, visual communication, and education. For many years, I have taught photography and supported emerging practitioners in developing visual ideas, creative projects, and research-based practices. My work has increasingly moved beyond photography as an image-making discipline to explore how people create, preserve, and transmit knowledge through material objects, visual signs, places, and creative practices. This has led to a developing research interest in material culture and cultural heritage.

My current research focuses on Amazigh weaving traditions in southern Morocco, examining textiles as repositories of cultural knowledge and memory. Following initial research into the motifs and visual structure of a Taznakht carpet, I am now developing a fieldwork project to explore oral histories, weaving knowledge, and intergenerational transmission among Amazigh weavers.

I am particularly interested in what happens when cultural knowledge is embodied in a material practice: how it is learned, remembered, adapted, and passed on between generations. My wider research includes cultural memory and visual protest in Prague, indigenous and cultural heritage in Southern Africa, material approaches to creative practice, analogue photographic processes, and the recognition of practice-based research as a legitimate form of knowledge production.

I approach photography as both a creative practice and a research method. Images can document, but they can also help us observe, question, and understand the cultural environment. I am currently developing my practice as an independent emerging researcher and mentor, with an interest in supporting practitioners who want to develop research through creative practice.

My work is increasingly guided by one central question: How do cultures preserve and transmit knowledge through the things they create? I am interested in the spaces between the object and the story, the image and the memory, and creative practice and research.
